Product description

"We wanted to go back to basics, go back to the source, it was just me singing live with a rhythm section - no overdubbing, no gimmicks, no complicated horn and string arrangements, just get the song down in an entire take, capture the meaning of the song, its spirituality, its life, and capture that moment, right there. And I think that's what we've done," says Tom Jones, the veteran singer from Wales, who turns 70 this year and who has just completed `Praise and Blame', his follow up to 2008's acclaimed `24 Hours' and quite simply his finest work to date.

It is a truly remarkable record, one that captures the Tom Jones who listened to Mahalia Jackson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe on the radio as a child growing up, who thought gospel music was "just like rock'n'roll, every bit as exciting but with deeper lyrics", the Tom Jones who belted out The Lord's Prayer as a jubilatory spiritual in school assembly, "because that was the only way I knew how to sing it, it was natural for me."

This is Tom Jones going back to his roots on an album of gospel, blues, traditional and country songs, wearing his heart on his sleeve, emotionally raw and true.

Recording with producer Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, Ray LaMontagne, Paolo Nutini, Laura Marling) at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in the little village of Box in Wiltshire, coaxed the most exhilarating performances out of the singer.

With musicians including steel guitarist BJ Cole, keyboardist Booker T Jones (of Memphis soul legends Booker T and the MGs), Hammond organist Chris Holland and background vocalists Gillian Welch, Alison Pierce, Dave Rawlings and Orin Waters at hand, Tom has quite simply delivered his tour de force. It's him bearing his soul, singing from the heart, telling it like it is.

« Lacks conviction »
When Tom Jones sang "She's A Lady" or "Delilah," did anyone doubt that he meant it? That's my problem with this album. I have no idea what Mr. Jones's beliefs are, but his voice here, though technically excellent, doesn't sound like he means what he's singing -- that is, what the songwriters were trying to convey. Instead, he just sounds depressed. Wish I could give the album more stars, but I don't believe he earned them.

« A pleasant surprize! »
As a teenager, I listened to Tom Jones sing tunes such a "What's New Pussycat?" and heard a strong sexy voice. Than he sort of fell of my radar screen until I saw his concert at Cardiff Castle on TV when he was in his 60's. That VOICE and his charisma was still there. I was hooked. I now own several of his CD'S and this one blew me away. Gone is the big back-up band and in it's place is minimal accompaniment and the VOICE. Along with that are the lyrics that speak to life and spirit. It is a departure from his normal type of music and just further illustrates the versatility of his talent. This is a MUST HAVE for your collection.

« Deacon Jones Brings it! »
What a surprise! Tom Jones singing spirituals! He has always had that dynamic powerful range and he always sang with soul so it is only fitting he finally record gospels. Tom seems to be soul searching in his latter years and this CD reflects it powerfully. There are some strong black influenced songs that highlight this recording "Lord Help"(my favorite),Did Trouble Me, Strange Things, "Didn't it Rain?" and Nobody's Fault but Mine. And some some standards that are done well "Ain't No Grave", "Run On" and a few strange dark poetic songs such as Dylan's "What good am I?" and "Burning Hell" with a few so so songs thrown in like "If I give My Soul" and "Don't Knock" but overall the music is very well done underneath Tom's unique approach. Some of em rock you and some have a bluesy feel and some shock you that they are coming from Tom Jones.
I love most of the cuts and the more you listen to it the more it grows on you. It is not as good by any means as 24 Hours with its powerful horns and arrangemnets but this one is almost like an experimental dark journey into a man's soul. The album cover even refelcts that and on the inside has Tom with eyes closed and hands stretched out spiritually. I hope Tom has found his peace in the Lord and keeps using his great vocal gift and i'll keep buying.

« Was never a fan of Tom Jones... »
...until now.

The songs and production of this record make it one of my favorites of all time. Not my favorite Tom Jones record. My favorite record, period. (That's saying a whole lot, considering how much music I have listened to, been around, and made myself.) I have been listening to this record pretty much nonstop, and though I am not a god-fearing woman, this record almost makes me wish I was.It seems to me that Ethan Johns and Tom Jones were going for a Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin-esque feel on this one, but in my opinion, they surpassed their aim. Good work, all around.
